Unemployment and poverty are widespread in rural areas of the country. While rural population is majorly dependent on agriculture and labor work for their livelihood, household incomes in villages are quite low impacting the overall quality of life. Livelihood is a powerful means for fighting backwardness and poverty. For MVT, livelihood is not only a way of economic growth but also an empowerment that brings ownership, accountability, self-esteem and dignity in peoples’ life.
Our livelihood programs intend at generating better employment alternatives, maximizing involvement of marginalized communities in income generating and livelihood activities, reduction of migration by promoting self-employment ventures within the area, modernization of traditional livelihood activities, and conducting training and workshops on new trends and best practices in the field.
We identify and enhance existing potential in particular area and help in converting into marketable skills.
Our livelihood initiatives emphasize on promoting self-employment, mainly in non-farm sector. We aim to generate more and more employment opportunities within the villages and add into household income.
MVT’s livelihood program aims to remove the barrier of gender, caste, disability and support the community members in income generating activity and develop self-reliance in them.
Rural population, especially women folk not only have a low literacy rate but visibly lack employment-oriented skills. Women in our intervention area come from socially as well as economically weaker background and have grown up experiencing discrimination in access to learning opportunities.
Our skill development initiatives are designed not only to promote to women empowerment but also lead to improving household productivity and employability. The project focuses on supporting such poor women who are keen to learn employment-oriented skills and improve the family condition by undertaking a wage/self-employment.
Model Village Trust is making constant efforts to generate livelihood options in villages and economically empower the disadvantaged section. We encourage small scale businesses and self-employment options among women, youths, small and marginal farmers and laborers. Promotion of non-farm-based self-employment activities in villages helps in reducing over dependence of rural economy of agriculture sector and addresses the issue of migration at the same time.
Our efforts focus on entrepreneurship development programs, skill development, financial assistance and mentoring.
More than 60% of the rural workforce is employed in agriculture and allied sectors which has significantly increased the pressure on one particular sector. In past few decades, literacy rate in rural areas has significantly increased but growth in employment opportunities is truly disappointing.
We promote social entrepreneurship as a livelihood option to address the issue of poverty and unemployment in rural India. We establish small scale business units in our identified villages and create employment opportunities for the underprivileged rural population.
However, the aim of this initiative is not limited to tackle the problem of unemployment and poverty but to contribute in solving societal issues as well.
